I started my day with a ride on my favorite horse. It’s always important to remember that when riding it can become easy for the rider to want to get something done perfectly and if you aren’t careful you can be unfair to your horse. They get tired just like we do and it’s not fair to always want more. Climbing requires one move at a time and this applies in riding too. This morning O and I started out having some trouble finding the right spot for an ideal take off over this single vertical fence. Once we got the distance how we both liked I patted his neck, cooled him down, and didn’t ask for anything else. He needed to know the goal was accomplished and his work was appreciated. Positive reinforcement, which serves as a reward for a job well done, is key across species and beneficial in most sports and for most athletes. Good boy O!
