why I consume fructose with my starches:

basically: having fructose in your food will slow the glucose entering the blooodstream.

Here’s why:

Believe it or not, but we have been lied to about sugar for a majority of our lives. In this post, when I refer to sugar, im referring to natural, organize foods that contain fructose, glucose, lactose, and sucrose.

I am NOT referring to carbs that have been processed. Things like agave, high fructose corn syrup, soda, cookies, cakes, candy, crackers, sports and energy drinks (the fucking worst), and frozen desserts.

I’m also not talking about starches just yet. Hear me out.

The sugar madness started back in 1970 when the health industry started talking about the value of “complex carbs” in the diet. Many dietitians claimed that starches were more slowly absorbed than sugar. The more fiber, the slower it will metabolize, right? From this, people were lead to think that grains and legumes were far more superior when it came to which carb is better. Let’s dive into why this is incorrect :D

According to the American Diabetes Society, the glycemic index is a ranking of carbs on a scale from 0 to 10 according to the expense of which they raise bloood sugar levels after eating them.

It’s understood that foods with higher GI ill be worse for us than those with lower GI. The highest scoring GI foods included pure glucose followed by white bread, corn, rice, pasta etc.

It turns out that simple sugary foods like fruit, honey, root veggies, and fruit juice have a lower GI than said foods mentioned above because they contain BOTH GLUCOSE AND FRUCTOSE.

Fructose has one of the lowest GI numbers - 11 depending on which table you’re looking at.

Fructose enters the bloood very very slowly and is mostly digested in the small intestine while starches aren’t digested until they reach the larger intestine where they can sometimes get stuck and ferment. Another hit to the carbs!

More on this because it excites me SO MUCH:
Research shows that fructose is far more heat-producing than glucose. This means fructose is super good for supporting a higher metabolism! And if you’re gaining weight with fruit, it’s more about how much you’re consuming than the fruit itself. And lets face it, its so easy to over consume fruit. Its just so good.

Research also shows that
- Fructose helps detox the liver for alcohol 80% faster than without it. This is why I pair all my alcoholic drinks with fructose! Vodka cranberries all day baby!
- Fructose increases CO2 and energy production
- THIS FACT IS SO COOL: Fructose can enter the cell without the assistance of insulin and can be used as energy. This makes fruit ideal for diabetics.
- Fructose can improve the retention of magnesium and other vital nutrients :)

WHAT IM NOT SAYING IS to run out and overdose on fruit juice. Eating too much will cause weight gain. I did that this month :D Never ever ever eat your fructose alone, always pair it with a protein and fat. By combining fat and protein with carbs, you will slow the absorbency of the sugars even more, creating a meal that will produce constant energy throughout your entire day :)

*please note that if your gut is insanely messed up like mine was and is…adding in simple sugars can fuel the flame. Go slow with introducing your sugars and if you notice you’re peeing all text time, slow down and try again after some gelatin therapy to help heal your body a bit more.
