Did you know that baboons can teach us a lot about social change?
🐒
In his book 'A Primate's Memoir,' Robert Sapolsky describes a fascinating study of olive baboons in Kenya. After the aggressive, dominant males in one troop died from eating contaminated meat, the remaining group transformed. With the aggressive males gone, the troop's social dynamics shifted to a more peaceful, cooperative structure led by females and less aggressive males.
What happened? Less aggression, more bonding, and a reduction in stress across the group. It shows us that even in traditionally hierarchical societies, a shift towards nurturing and cooperative leadership can create a more harmonious environment.
Could we learn something from this for our own lives? Let’s think about how we approach leadership, power, and community.
