Happy Lunar New Year, my lovelies! Many of you already know this, but I am half-Asian and have always celebrated the Lunar New Year. Unfortunately, I am spending another year away from everyone, but that doesn’t mean that I won’t celebrate. Today I will be cooking some of my favorite dishes, cleaning my home, and calling everyone. The Lunar New Year is a wonderful festival that lasts for days on end. Heralding the first new moon of the lunisolar calendars, it is a period that symbolizes renewal, family gatherings, and paying respect to one’s ancestors! We usually celebrate with vibrant parades (where you will see dragon dancing, for example), massive feasts, visits to loved ones nearby, and other traditional rituals that are supposed to bring good fortune and joy. I have not been able to celebrate many of the Lunar New Years in Asia, but I have the warmest memories of the few that I have. One of the sweetest Lunar New Year traditions is the giving of “lucky money,” which is typically presented in red envelopes to your loved ones. They symbolize good luck AND help to get rid of evils. The monetary gift is more than just a token of wealth and luck though; it embodies the giving of blessings from the giver to the receiver. By giving lucky money on this special day, you are wishing the receiver a year of prosperity, health, and longevity. Of course, if you would like to celebrate this Lunar New Year with me by participating in this tradition, you are welcome to do so. We may not have physical envelopes, so we will just have to use our imagination lol! But most importantly, I am wishing you all a happy Lunar New Year! Let’s channel the dragon’s indomitable spirit to soar to new heights this year! 🐉🧧✨
