I really appreciate those of you that stuck it out while I've been gone. About a year ago my aunt was diagnosed with stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer. Her odds were never great, but she had a lot she wanted to live for, so she fought it as hard as she possibly could. It was understood that this might be the last holiday season that I would be able to see her, so I made sure to travel home at Thanksgiving, and also go with her on the family trip around New Year's. I’m very thankful for the time I got with her. Last week, I got a call that she wasn’t doing well and probably wouldn’t be leaving the hospital. So I hopped on a plane and went straight to the hospital. She was still in good spirits when I got to see her, and still mentally with it for the first visit. By the next day it was obvious she was deteriorating quickly. She passed peacefully the next day. She was my grandmother’s primary caregiver so the rest of the week and weekend I helped with the funeral service and moved my grandmother into assisted living. My grandmother was having a difficult time with the transition and taking it out on others, my father especially. My cousin and I are the two people she will still listen to, so I did everything I could to help. We were able to get her settled into the facility and every day she gets a little better. My aunt’s service was very nice, well attended, and did a good job of honoring her legacy. Before I left I also wanted to help my family with sorting through my aunt’s things. I think everything is in good enough shape for me to return home.
