Added 2024-11-24 12:00:17 +0000 UTCOn this day in history, Charles Darwin published the Origin of the Species, asserting the theory of evolution (I'm simplifying but stay with me here). Darwin was an interesting guy and made such an impact on society that even today there are two surviving cultural references that play on his work:
1) The Darwin Awards (worth a google if you're not familiar)
2) A list of pros and cons on marriage, which lists out the funny annoyances of having a longterm parter.
He ultimately decided the pros outweighed the cons, stating that "Only picture to yourself a nice soft wife on a sofa with good fire, & books & music perhaps."
He left out the part where it would be preferable that she be wearing skimpy red lingerie, but did add in a funny section in the Con section about having to visit relatives.
