I came into a collection of these from a WW2 collector and historian. These pieces are really neat - they're heavy, thick cotton (almost like canvas) and in a variety of patterns with muted tones of red, blues and grey. They're considered Japanese workwear and would've been worn as your average daily outfit to perform errands, or work in your garden, or what have you - like an equivalent to overalls.
