Bamboo-handled parasols, like the vintage one I’m holding here, have been around since around the year 700 AD and began to be widely used by the Middle Ages.
This one is modeled after the Japanese style, but you’ll see them used in many cultures from that time. They were typically made of silk or paper and adhered to a wooden stick and were for protection from the sun, as well as adornment for tea or geisha ceremonies. As a result, the colors and patterns used represented one’s status.
It wasn’t until a bit later that they were adapted to act was umbrellas during monsoon season, utilizing durable and water-repellent materials while still retaining a flavor of a traditional Japanese aesthetic.
