Where do you think I would book a room while staying in Amsterdam? Of course, I chose a small hotel in the center of the famous Red Light District: De Wallen. For me, it’s like the Silicon Valley of the sex business. It all started here :).
Sex work was regulated in this area as early as the 14th century, but it wasn’t fully legalized until the late 1990s or early 2000s.
Have you ever wondered why they use red lights? It’s actually quite simple. In the 15th century, girls would come to the docks by the river to attract sailors for their services. They used red lamps because red light made their skin, hair, and teeth appear sexier and more attractive.
It’s funny because we still use that trick in our business today. The difference is that we’re more aware—or perhaps just more transparent—about why it works. The red light itself isn’t inherently sexy; it’s simply more forgiving. It mercifully hides or disguises imperfections in the skin and body.
That’s it. Red lamps may look poetic, even romantic, but they’re really just an old-school filter—designed to make something appear more alluring than it truly is.
