This taro patch has been growing for about three months. Those tall plants behind the taro are sugarcane. 🎋 It’s good to plant things together because each plant has different compounds that they excrete into the soil, and help create a more diverse and lush environment. Native Americans liked to plant corn, beans, and squash together and called it the “three sisters” because of how well they grew together. I like to take this technique into account when I’m planting my gardens, even though I live in Hawaii. The white lines are electric fencing, and they keep the cows out. I let them graze alongside the gardens so that I can shovel manure directly onto the plant roots.

Look at this gigantic taro I just harvested! A typical taro root that’s commercially grown is about the size of a grapefruit. I managed to grow this massive one through an old fashioned technique that doesn’t involve any chemical inputs. The key is to plant it in an area that’s downhill and gets lots of rain drainage because taro likes wet, boggy soil. Then I put cow manure around the roots when it’s planted. The concentration of minerals and probiotics in the manure is great for soil health.

It’s finally citrus season here in Hawaii. Even though we don’t see much of a change in weather, something that punctuates the year is the varieties of fruit that go into season. These oranges are still green but any day now they’ll be ready. 🍊

This purple plant I’m holding is called a Hawaiian Ti Leaf. The purple is my favorite variety and the one I have growing in my garden. It’s one of the first plants brought to Hawaii by the Polynesians, aka a “canoe plant” because it was brought over in the first canoes. It’s known to help ward off evil spirits and was even used by high priests in ancient ceremonial rituals. Sometimes people in Hawaii tie them to their cars or wear them for positive energy and spiritual protection. You can use them to wrap up food when cooking too.

Just went for an icy plunge in my waterfall 🧊 It’s a cloudy day here, and when the clouds roll over the mountains where I am, the rivers and waterfalls get really cold. Which makes for a perfect cold plunge. Did you know that cold plunging releases endorphins that make you feel high? Sometimes I like to go for a jog and then jump in. So invigorating!

Having some cuddles with my sweet cow Layla this morning. I’ve known her since she was one year old. Cows all have unique personality traits just like humans or dogs. Layla is a really funny cow and she’s known for having a strong appetite. She’s also kind of a loner and will go off searching for special treats. As you can see she’s also really small because she’s part mini-Jersey. So she’s not too intimidating.. She loves snacking on fresh bananas and breadfruits. 🍌🍈

I love using an old fashioned drying line for laundry on the farm. Doing laundry this way is way more sustainable and better for the environment. Having a solar powered dryer is the second best option. But when it’s rained for many days in a row and the skies are cloudy, my solar system goes low in power and my drying line is the only option. It’s also important in the tropics to hang up your towels in the sun so that they don’t get moldy. We love sustainability around here 🌎✌🏼

Just got done milking my cow…who just had a baby! The first milk that comes in is called colostrum. It’s golden yellow and has unique benefits. It’s high in retinol which is a pre-converted form of vitamin A. It’s also high in antibodies which fight invasive bacteria and protect the baby’s delicate microbiome. This makes it a strong immunity tonic for humans as well. Swipe to see Buttercup and her baby 🤎🤍

Heading to town to get some alfalfa for the cows. I made this overnight herbal tea with some local Hawaiian herbs. I used mamaki as a base which is a leafy herb that’s endemic to Hawaii. It likes to grow in wet areas, so it does well in the forests with springs here, and along the coast by the jungle streams. I got mine from the farmer’s market! It’s super high in minerals. There’s also some Reishi mushroom in here, which is good for inducing a calm mood. Hope everyone is having a blessed morning. Aloha 🌿

I went for a nature hike this morning near my home to see a waterfall and immerse myself in the cool, wet 💦 jungle air🌀. Here on the coast, there are many waterfalls pouring along the streams that come off the mountain where the volcano is. The streams are fed by volcanic spring water, and all lead to the ocean. In this spot there’s plenty of bamboo, guava, and wild ginger. Those white flowers are ginger flowers and they smell soo intoxicating.. Swipe for an immersive nature sound experience.

I made this matcha latte with fresh milk from my cows. I love matcha because it’s high in antioxidants. Matcha is made of ground up green tea leaves, and traditionally toasted rice is added for body and flavor. I had mine over ice because it’s super hot today! 🥵 if I made this for you would you try it? 😊🍵
