2022-07-01 21:37:45 +0000 UTC View Postwhat a women’s bathing suit in the 1920s looked like this thing is 100% wool and itchy as hell. the whole thing slides on (you step into it) and it buttons at the top on one side. it’s got attached shorts underneath the skirt. this one still has the original label - the Monarch bathing suit company - and they’re hard to find nowadays. This came from an old, long abandoned general store a few states away, found by friends of ours.

2022-06-26 17:51:41 +0000 UTC View PostIt’s hot outside. This is about as publicly undressed as one could get in the early 20th century during the summer months. This is a 1920s light blue silk summer dress. It’s designed like a slip but has detailing intended to be worn and seen as a stand-alone dress. It feels and flutters like a dream 💙

2022-06-22 14:37:02 +0000 UTC View PostMFW it’s Monday and I have to get out of bed. Especially in this heat wave. Armchair is a 1940s leather armchair (super comfy despite the age). The terrifying looking teddy bear framed poster is a “pin the berries to the teddy bear” children’s game from 1919, when the popularity of Teddy Roosevelt became commercialized. This was the (god awful scary and dangerous - they used tiny razor-sharp nails as pins) precursor to pin Pin The Tail On The Donkey games we see today.
2022-06-20 18:10:58 +0000 UTC View PostA little sneak preview of a new kimono and these neat swamp charms from the shop The kimono is a 1970s embroidered teal robe. The charms are painted chicken feet attached to a vintage rosary and traditionally are worn, or hung above a homes entrance, to gather good luck. They come in all different colors and they’re made down in the bayou.
2022-06-18 16:35:15 +0000 UTC View PostOur last kimono in the shop just sold! Glad I got to try it on before it went into its next home. This is a mid century golden yellow brocade kimono style robe with thick embroidery down the back. Happy Friday :) 💛
2022-06-17 17:38:10 +0000 UTC View PostA little history on bed jackets this morning: Sheer, lace and frilly bed jackets were popularized in 1930s in men’s playboy films (from where Playboy gets its namesake) where starlets of the films would don them in the evening over lingerie. They were used to allure, and create subtle mystery about what’s underneath (and less about warmth). By the 1940s & 50s they rose in popularity with women, and became an expected part of their sleepwear for a woman of stature. It was also customary to gift one when a woman was admitted to the hospital for illness or to give birth. These ones are from the 1950s. We had more in other colors and designs but they sold before I had a chance to try them on!
2022-06-13 17:02:44 +0000 UTC View Posthappy Saturday y’all! what it might look like if this was the 1960s and I put on your robe in the morning instead of mine. This is a simple 1960s men’s navy-colored lounge robe made of thick cotton and shortened cuffs. Very heavy but very comfy.

2022-06-10 17:05:00 +0000 UTC View PostA 1970s nylon embroidered fringe shawl came into the shop. Every time I model a piece it sells almost immediately. The piece I wore in yesterday’s post sold an hour later! Instead of putting it in the display window on the mannequin I should just stand in the display window myself and model it 💋

2022-05-23 18:36:01 +0000 UTC View PostA post-war floor length embroidered kimono. Also from Japan but made later (late 50s, early 60s) with a similar golden thread dragon motif down the back. This one’s neat because it’s deadstock (never worn). The kimono’s sash is still sewn within the sleeve. Within minutes of posting this kimono for the shop, it sold 🖤
2022-05-21 15:26:43 +0000 UTC View Posta little dress up in the shop this morning - over the next week I’ll do a series of the antique/vintage robes in the shop this is a World War 2 silk kimono that was purchased in Japan during the war by a solider who sent it home to his partner back in the US. I have the original box it came in! This silk feels like liquid on your skin and although the photos here show otherwise, I hated taking it off. It also came with super rare souvenir silk lingerie (sold those out of my ship’s display window in the first week we opened the doors).
