Don’t store your sleeping bag in a compression sack! Only use it while backpacking 🎒. Keeping your bag compressed while in storage ruins its ability to provide the designed air barrier between your skin and the elements 🥶.
Since I keep mine in my truck for car camping purposes, I invested in a small, plastic storage tub. I love it because it doubles as a camp table as seen in pic 2 😃

Rechargeable devices are remarkably more convenient, cheaper to operate, and better for the environment 🌎♻️. GoalZero makes some bomber solar chargers and power packs for outdoor adventures 🤙🏻. My tent lamp, head lamp, radio, and power pack can all be charged from this lightweight, backpacking solar panel ☀️

Ever had the 3 am chills while camping 🥶? It occurs from humidity buildup in your bag. The first line of defense is to make sure you’re not over-layering for bed. The fewer clothes you have on, the fewer fibers there are for humidity to collect in between.
My Nemo Disco sleeping bag has what Nemo calls Thermo Gills to let excess heat and humidity out without letting cold air in. I leave these unzipped when I go to bed so I can zip them up if I wake up chilly 😎.

Keeping up with your vehicles routine preventative maintenance 🔧 keeps the adventure going and gets you home safe. When I checked my odometer this morning, I noticed I was within 140 miles of my next oil change. I delayed my climbing trip an hour to service my vehicle. If you take care of your equipment it will take care of you 🤠

Yes, I really do practice climbing in bed 🤪 Tonight I’ve chosen to work on my anchoring. Building an anchor comes after climbing the pitch, so you may be fatigued, anxious, and have pumped-out hands. Practicing your skills on the ground, or in bed, will help you overcome such factors on the wall 🤘🤓🪢

When in doubt, plenty out🤘🏻

Using liquid chalk as a primer is my preference for chalking up. The alcohol base is great for those of us with sweaty hands 👏

Once you reach your destination after an aggressive hike, put on your outer layers and let your clothing system do its job. Your base layer will transfer moisture to your outer layer. Staying dry = Warmth 😎

Enjoying the outdoors during the chilly 🥶 season comes down to staying warm. Staying warm means staying dry. Staying dry means choosing the right base layer for your endeavors.
High intensity: lightweight synthetic
Chilling by the fire: heavyweight merino wool
I’m going climbing in the morning, so I’m going with my Smartwool lightweight synthetic base layer 😊

Practice due diligence by researching 📖👀 the area, approach, route beta, and gear required before going climbing 🧗♂️
Some climbing areas require a waiver to be signed prior to accessing the land. Other information, such as raptor protection season and parking regulations, are also typically included in the area beta.

Using two-way radios while multi-pitch climbing drastically enhances your communication with your partner(s) and good communication saves lives. Radios eliminate the questioning of “did you say off belay?” 🤓
Consider reenforcing the manufacturer’s hard point and or using a zip-tie rather than the provided bracelet to avoid dropping your radios 🥳

A good belayer is always watching the climber and calls out safety concerns. In this pic, I’m so focused on mantling the shelf that I could have easily z-clipped into the draw near my left thigh.

Climbing outdoors doesn’t mean it’s always hard. Your first route can be as easy as climbing a ladder. This is a pic of me climbing my first outdoor route. Plenty of jug holds and slightly forward leaning. Learn the Yosemite Decimal System to understand route difficulties before planning a trip.

If you’re new to multi-pitch, it’s wise to practice belaying from above on short, low-grade routes. This allows your partner to be confident on strong holds if you find yourself asking them to slow down as you acclimate to the new system.

While blasting berms on a mountain bike 🚵, keep the pedal respective to the direction you’re turning, up ⬆️ This allows you to lean into the turn without catching the ground and transfers your weight into the opposite pedal. The transfer of weight into the down pedal is essential to providing necessary downforce to sustain traction 🤘🏻
