Garters and Garter belts have been around for a LONG time. Garters were worn by both men and women since around the 1500s as a way to display your affluence by the color and pattern of your socks. They were typically tied just below the knee.
A (weird) fun fact: In the 1960s/70s during the sexual revolution, a man could be the recipient of a garter from his prom date. If he received one, it was proudly displayed on his car's rearview mirror for the night. It's still tradition to gift garters today - and the date wears it on their wrist.
A garter belt (like I'm wearing here) came a little bit later, and were created to hold up stockings that rose higher than the knee. The ribbons hanging off of the belt clip onto thigh-high stockings. They were used for both utility, and for erotica throughout history: you'll see plain garter belts as well as ones with intricate detailing or lace. Their association with erotica rose once stockings/nylons were invented, and rendered a garter belt unnecessary.

Polyester became popular in the 1970s due to its ability to be manufactured quickly and cheaply, and the fabric doesn’t wrinkle. It’s easy to wash, lightweight and strong. It was invented in the 1940s, but took off in the 1970s due to strong advertising around those in the working world as easy and durable, unlike handmade or manufactured cotton garments from the eras before.

I’ve acquired this neat seemingly space-related mug to drink shower cocktails out of. It references the Louisiana Du Pont factory from 1982 (before it was steeped in all the human and environmental rights issues that came to light) and on the reverse a picture of earth (?) with Saturn-like rings (?) and the word PONCHARTRON across it. Underneath it reads “Off-Planet Safety.” Google research and image search found nothing. Du Pont was producing neoprene fabrics which they did use in the space program so maybe that’s the connection?

It’s heavy, stiff wool and oversized for me, so I just threw it on over some denim and a bra. Also my space jewelry (thank you very much to y’all who keep sending me gifts from my Throne wishlist! 💋) Anyway, the Korean War is oft overlooked since it’s sandwiched between the romanticized era of WWII and the iconic political, social and fashion movements during the Vietnam War. That said, the Korean War started soon after WW2, as the Japanese occupation of Korea ended, with North Korea propped up by the then-Soviet Union and South Korea by the United States. By 1950 war broke out and continued for 3 years. The M-51 style was so effective at keeping soldiers comfortable despite unfavorable weather that production continued until the 1990s.
